How to choose the right fairway shaft the first time
Do you want better control and longer shots from the fairway? Then your fairway shaft plays a bigger role than you might think. A shaft that matches your swing speed, rhythm, and ball flight can provide both stability and better feel – while a wrong choice can cost you distance and accuracy.
What is a fairway shaft and does it matter?
The shaft controls how the clubhead moves through the swing. It affects the ball's height, direction, and feel. According to TrueFitClubs and Golf Digest most club fitters choose a fairway shaft that weighs 5–20 grams more than a driver shaft, depending on the manufacturer, flex and model.
A driver shaft typically weighs around 40–80 grams, while a fairway shaft usually ranges between 50–90 grams. This is because the extra weight provides better control when hitting from the grass.
A lighter shaft with low kick point helps the ball get airborne, while a heavier shaft with high kick point gives lower ball flight and better control in the wind. It's all about finding the right balance – not just about weight.
A little tip:
- Regular flex: 85–95 mph
- Stiff flex: 95–110 mph
-
X-stiff flex: 110+ mph

How to choose a fairway shaft
The right shaft choice depends on your swing speed, tempo, and desired ball flight. The table below provides an overview of standard correlations:
| Flex | Typical swing speed (mph) | Typical weight (grams) | Target group / benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ladies (L) | under 75 | 45–55 g | Women and very slow swing |
| Senior (A) | 75–85 | 50–60 g | Seniors, relaxed tempo |
| Regular (R) | 85–95 | 55–70 g | Beginners and light intermediates |
| Stiff (S) | 95–110 | 70–80 g | Advanced players, fast rhythm |
| X-Stiff (X) | over 110 | 80–90 g | Elite players, high speed |
Sources such as True Temper and Fujikura Ventus show that fairway versions of driver shafts often weigh about 10 grams more and are a few centimeters shorter to provide stability in the transition.
If in doubt, it's better to start with a slightly softer shaft – it's easier to feel if it feels too “alive,” and you can always choose a stiffer one later.
(Also compare with our driver shafts and hybrid shafts).
The technical terms – explained briefly and clearly
- Flex: How much the shaft bends. Stiffer flex = lower spin and flatter ball flight.
- Torque: How much the shaft twists at impact (typically 3.0–5.0°). Low torque provides stability, high torque offers a softer feel.
- Kick point: The place where the shaft bends the most. High kick point = low ball flight, low kick point = high ball flight.
- Weight: Light = faster swing, heavy = more precision.
Fairway shafts are often trimmed 0.5"–1.5" extra at the tip compared to driver shafts (tip trimming), which increases stability on shots from the fairway according to OEM guides (True Temper, Mitsubishi Golf).
Materials and technologies in fairway shafts
Most modern fairway shafts are made of carbon fiber (graphite), but the weight and profile vary significantly:
| Model | Launch | Spin | Weight (grams, FW version) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fujikura Ventus Blue | Mid | Mid | 55–80 g |
| Mitsubishi Tensei CK Pro Orange | Low/Mid | Low | 65–85 g |
| Project X HZRDUS Smoke | Low/Mid | Low | 60–90 g |
Graphite shafts reduce vibrations and provide better energy transfer than steel. If you choose a "mid-high launch" profile, you get easier ball launch and higher flight – perfect from the fairway.

Fitting and small adjustments – it pays off
Even a premium shaft can feel wrong if the length doesn't fit. Typical lengths according to OEM standards:
- Driver: approximately 45"
- 3–wood: 42–43"
- 5–wood: 41–42"
A difference of half an inch can significantly change both strike point and direction.
At WePlayAgain we check flex, torque and condition on each shaft, measure length and take unique photos. You get a 14-day trial period to assess the feel on the course.

Fairway shaft for women and seniors
Many women and seniors experience heavy or stiff standard shafts. The result is low ball flight and short shots. A shaft weighing 50–60 grams with L- or A-flex provides more “snap” and helps the ball get into the air quickly.
If you play regularly and find Ladies‑flex too soft, try a light regular‑flex – it combines control and comfort.
(See our Driver Ladies Flex and Beginner package).
How long does a fairway shaft last?
A good fairway shaft can last for many years, but gradually loses its stiffness. If the ball feels 'dead' or loses distance, it may be time for a replacement.
Signs of wear:
- Cracks or discoloration around the adapter
- Loose grip
- Uneven contact and lost energy
Check the shafts every few seasons. You can also find Iron sets under 2000kr and Wedge & Chipper, if you want to upgrade the entire set without breaking the budget.
Our recommendations
| Level | Recommended shaft | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New to golf | Regular flex, 60–65 g, low kick | High ball flight and easy contact |
| Intermediate player | Stiff flex, 70–75 g, mid kick | Stability and consistent ball flight |
| Fast swing | X‑stiff, 80–90 g, high kick | Low spin and maximum control |
| Senior / woman | 50–60 g, low kick, L/S flex | Effortless length |
