Give your golf game new life with a used fairway wood
Let's make it easy: here you get everything you need to know about a fairway wood – also called a fairway wood.
We explain the difference between the models, provide concrete advice for selection, and share our best tips for both new and experienced golfers.
What is a fairway wood and why is it important?
A fairway wood is the club you use when the driver becomes too much, and your irons don't reach far enough.
It is designed for shots from the fairway, tee, or light rough – in other words, just where you want length but still control.
Simply put:
- Low loft (13–18°) = longer shots, but requires solid contact
- Higher loft (19–24°) = easier to hit up in the air and better from the grass
- Longer shaft than an iron, but shorter than the driver
The most common are 3-wood (approx. 15°), 5-wood (18–20°) and 7-wood (21–24°).
Many players especially use the 5-wood as the “safety club” from the fairway, because it is easier to control than a driver.
Which fairway wood is best for you?
1. Your swing speed and experience
- If you have low swing speed (typically under 90 mph with driver), then choose a fairway wood with high loft and a regular shaft.
- If you have fast swing speed, then you can go for stiff or x-stiff flex with slightly lower loft for more penetrating ball flight.
See also our related selection of golf shafts – here you can adjust flex and weight.
2. What will you use it for?
- From tee: choose 3-wood (or 4-wood, if you want a bit more loft and forgiveness).
- From fairway or rough: 5-wood or 7-wood does the job better.
3. Your existing set
Do you already have a set of irons and a driver?
Then it’s about ensuring a good distance gap (this is called “distance gapping”).
As a rule of thumb, there should be about 10–15 meters difference between your clubs.
Fairway vs. Hybrid – what is the difference?
This question we hear often. Here is the short version:
| Fairway wood | Hybrid | |
|---|---|---|
| Loft | 13–24° | 17–28° |
| Shaft | Longer | Shorter |
| Shot Type | Sweeping motion | Slightly downward motion |
| Best from | Tee and fairway | Rough and semi-rough lies |
| Ball Flight | Higher, longer | Lower, more control |
If you struggle to get the ball in the air, a 5-wood or 7-wood can be a good substitute for a 3-hybrid.
Conversely, if you want to hit more "like an iron", try hybrid clubs.

Our recommendations – start confidently
Are you a new golfer?
Start simple. Choose a 5-wood with regular shaft and higher loft (18–20°).
It helps you get the ball in the air, and you get the feel of a solid wood without having to swing too hard.
You can find both men's and women's versions under beginner package.
Do you play regularly?
Then try a 3-wood as a backup to your driver – for example, for holes with narrow fairways or strong headwinds.
Look for models like Callaway Paradym or TaylorMade Qi10 – modern heads with a low center of gravity provide higher ball flight despite low loft.
Do you want more control?
Consider a 7-wood. It gives you iron-like precision but more distance. Many pros use it specifically as an alternative to long irons.
A few useful tips from us
- Don’t swing too hard. Fairway woods reward rhythm and clean contact – not raw power.
- Place the ball slightly forward in your stance. Not like with driver, but not in the middle of your feet either. This helps the ball get up in the air.
- Don’t dig the head into the ground at setup. Otherwise, you’ll lose loft – let it “sweep” lightly over the grass.
- Is the ball in the semi-rough? Choose a higher loft (e.g., 5-wood instead of 3-wood). It provides better contact.
Small adjustments can make a big difference in distance and stability.
