Used golf balls same great quality, price and good conscience

Used golf balls (also called water balls or lake balls) have become a staple in the bags of both beginners and experienced players. It's not just about the price – but also about quality, the environment, and common sense.

Why choose used golf balls?

In short: You save money, play with well-known top brands, and help the environment.

A new Titleist Pro V1 typically costs over 400 DKK per dozen. If you buy the same ball used (Grade A or Pearl Grade), the price is often around 150–200 DKK. This means a saving of 40–60% - without noticing a difference on the course, as long as the ball is correctly classified and intact.

For many players, it gives peace of mind to swing without worrying about what a “water hazard” costs. And it’s not a small number we lose: globally, 3–5 billion golf balls end up in nature every year.

A single ball can take over 100 years to decompose. By reusing it, you are doing both yourself and nature a favor.

Good for your wallet – and good for the planet.

What do the different quality grades mean?

Here is the difference between the most commonly used classifications:

  • Grade Pearl / Mint (5A) – Looks almost new. No scratches, no discoloration. Plays like new.
  • Grade A (4A) – Very good condition. Slight cosmetic wear, but fully performance.
  • Grade B (3A) – Small marks or discoloration. Perfect for practice and beginners.
  • Grade C (2A) – Clearly used. Good for ball buckets and practice surfaces.

At WePlayAgain, we describe the condition accurately as it is and take unique pictures of all items. This means that you always get what you see.

How to choose the right ball

Let’s make it easy: think about your level and your ball flight.

  • Are you new or do you play occasionally? Choose a ball focused on forgiveness – e.g. used Srixon Soft Feel or Wilson Staff DX2.
  • Do you play regularly and want a bit more control? Look at used Callaway Chrome Soft or TaylorMade TP5.
  • Are you chasing feel around the greens? Then Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x is still king – whether it’s new or used.

A little tip: When you buy used golf balls, you can test several brands cheaply. Players who previously stuck to one model suddenly have the opportunity to find a ball that fits their swing better.

Performance - what do the numbers really say?

Many ask: “Do used golf balls lose distance or spin?” The best tests show that fresh used balls (Grade Pearl or A) perform like new, as long as they haven’t been in water for months.

Top models like Pro V1, TP5 and Chrome Soft maintain their compression and elasticity if they are properly cleaned and dried. This means you still get the same ball flight, spin and feel.

The difference occurs first with very worn balls, where the surface (cover) has micro-damage. This can affect the aerodynamics – typically 2–5 meters shorter carry.

If you want to see and feel the difference, check out our golf balls category here.

We must take care of the environment

We lose millions of balls in Danish lakes and roughs every year. They don't just disappear. Plastic and rubber break down slowly and release small amounts of zinc and polymers into nature.

Choosing used golf balls is therefore not just an economic decision; it is a real environmental choice.

What should you pay attention to when buying used balls?

There is a huge difference in used golf balls online. Here is what you should watch out for:

  1. Refurbished balls – they are repainted and polished. Nice, yes, but the cover changes, and the feel will be different.
  2. Misclassification – some sellers mix grades. At WePlayAgain, we inspect all balls to ensure that the grades are accurate.
  3. Counterfeits – yes, they also exist in golf balls. Look for uneven logos and strange fonts.

In doubt? Ask us.

Price development and value

Used golf balls retain their price surprisingly well. Top models like Pro V1 or TP5 only lose a little value over time because the demand is always there. Cheaper models like Pinnacle or Wilson can be found for 1–2 DKK per ball in Grade B.

In general, the rule is: The newer the model and the higher the grade, the less difference on performance – and the greater the savings.

If you want to compare related equipment, you can for example see our selection of driver, fairway wood, or iron sets, so you get a complete set that matches your balls.

Frequently asked questions

Are used golf balls suitable for tournaments?

Yes – as long as the ball is an official model and not "refurbished," it is legal. Grade A or Pearl Grade is clearly preferred.

How many times can a ball be reused?

As long as the cover is intact and not dull or cracked, it can easily be played for 5–10 rounds.

Can you tell the difference between new and used during play?

Only cosmetically. Most golfers would not be able to distinguish based on the hit – neither in flight, sound, nor feel.

An honest choice

At WePlayAgain, everything is about transparency. We sell used golf equipment because it makes sense – economically and environmentally. Each ball and each club is manually checked, photographed, and described precisely as it is.
