What is a clubhead and why does it matter so much?

In short: the clubhead is the part of the golf club that meets the ball. Its shape, weight and material directly influence how the ball flies: high, low, straight or with a draw or fade.

A heavier head often gives more control, while a lighter head can give extra speed. The size (measured in “cc”, cubic centimeters) determines how forgiving the shot feels if you hit slightly off-center.

A small tip: if you have a lower swing speed, look for a head with slightly higher loft. It helps the ball up into the air and gives you more distance.

The difference between types of golf clubheads

There are several types of clubheads, each with its own function.

• Driver heads: large, light and designed to give distance from the tee. See our drivers here.

What to look for when buying used clubheads

When you buy used, the condition matters more than anything else. We always describe exactly how each head looks, both cosmetically and functionally.

• Like new: Minimal or no use. The surface is clean and the face is intact.
• Good: Light cosmetic wear, but full functionality.
• Okay:  Clearly visible wear, but a solid practice or backup option.
• Worn: Mostly for practice: the price reflects the condition.

Should you choose steel or titanium?

The material affects both weight and feel.

• Titanium is most often used in drivers and fairway woods. It is light, strong and gives high ball speed.
• Steel is typically found in irons and hybrids. It gives a more stable and controlled feel.

What suits your level and swing?

Here are some simple rules of thumb:

A few quick tips that can extend its lifespan:

1. Clean the face regularly, because dirt affects the ball’s spin.
2. Use a headcover (see our golf headcovers) to avoid scratches.
3. Check the grip and shaft now and then. You can always find new grips or hybrid shafts  with us.
